Biography:
Nigel Shafran came to prominence in the 1990s for his radical approach to Fashion Photography. Since that time he has shifted his attention to describe the relationship between the photographer and the photographed. This involves the people and places that play a part in his daily life. Previous works includes Ruthbook (1992- 1995); Dad’s Office (1996-1998), a document of a father and son’s relationship revealed through objects and Washing Up, 2000, a meditation on this mundane daily ritual.
Recent exhibitions include London Calling, 2010 at James Hyman Gallery; Theatres of the Real, FotoMuseum Provincie, Antwerp, curated by Joanna Lowry & David Green (2009); How We Are: Photographing Britain, at Tate, Britain, curated by Val Williams and Susan Bright (2007). His work is included in several public collections including Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Simmons and Simmons, London; Thyssen Bornemisza contemporary Art Foundation Salzburg; British Land Art at Plantation Place; Nottingham Castle Art Gallery and Museum.
His monographs are Flowers for ___, published by Koenig Books (2008); Edited Photographs 1992-2004, a Photoworks Monograph, published by Photoworks / Steidl (2004); Dad’ s Office, self-published (1999); and Ruthbook, self-published (1995).
Compost Pictures 2008-9 was exhibited at Charleston, Firle, Lewes, East Sussex UK from 2 April to 13 June 2010.
