notes on blankness
Whenever I look at a photograph I find it hard to draw any definitive conclusion from the document before me. Within any image there appears to be too much potential for interpretation to allow such a thing to be possible. When skillfully constructed and presented we may not feel this potential as acutely. But nevertheless even in the most careful use of the medium there always remains the nagging sensation that the photograph’s statement is not quite resolved. This lack of resolution means that the photograph will always be able to offer us an alternative reading. As viewers we are invited into the image to explore the variety of interpretations on offer and consider them as they jostle for our attention. It is this exploratory, open ended and ongoing process of looking at a photograph that I find the most captivating feature of the medium. As such in notes on blankness I have tried to produce a series of images that present the photograph as an inherently ambiguous document. These are photographs that invite imaginative engagement from the viewer and embrace the ambiguity of the medium. I hope that in each blank space the viewer will be able to project something of themselves into the frame and consider the nature of the medium and the process by which we view a photograph.
