Wolfgang Tillmans

Born in Germany, 1968

Lives and works in London and Berlin

Wolfgang Tillmans is considered one of the most important contemporary artists working today. His comprehensive and diverse body of work is distinguished not only by an attentive and insightful observation of his surroundings but also by an on-going, systematic investigation of the photographic medium’s foundations. In 2000, Tillmans was the first photographer and also the first non-English artist to be awarded the renowned Turner Prize. In 2009 he was awarded the Kulturpreis der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Photographie (The Culture Prize of the German Society for Photography).

His most recent solo exhibitions include Freedom from the Known at P.S.1, New York in 2006 (which toured North America), and Lighter at the Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin in 2008. In 2009 he was included in Making Worlds at the 53rd Venice Biennale.

He had a major exhibition at the Serpentine Gallery in 2010.
